The Busybody
Halloween was followed by a busy weekend for our family (well, mainly me), full of fun and worthy things.
Every Friday evening we have Bible study at our church. Harvey is leading it at the moment, and we're studying Ephesians. It's our church's version of Wednesday evening services. In fact, we may soon be moving it to Wednesday evenings.
Saturday morning, I participated in Walk Now for Autism Speaks on the National Mall. I have a new friend, the mother of a school friend of Gracie's, who has a son with autism, and she invited me to walk with her. The only time I'd attended that sort of event before was when I went with my friend Sandy to the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Tulsa. So I was excited to go to support my friend, to see what the event was all about, and to spend some time in a beautiful part of the city.
There were six of us in my friend's group, and I didn't know the other women before, but they were super friendly and fun. The morning was gorgeous, and we enjoyed browsing the booths, tasting the snacks, and walking the path from in front of the Capitol around the Washington Monument and back. My friend's little five-year-old son was a trooper, walking the two miles with the team and stopping only once at a food truck for a hot dog. Rock 4 Royale!
Next up for Saturday was family photos. A friend's husband has recently begun doing photography on the side, and he was gracious enough to take our family on a shoot. I'll share more about the location and the experience when we receive the photos.
Saturday evening I met a group of girlfriends for a birthday dinner in honor of my friend Nicole from church. It was fun to have a night out! Shortly after we were seated, we found out that the restaurant was having live music that night, and not the ambient background kind. It was so loud that we left feeling hoarse from yelling at each other. But we had lots of laughs and lots of fun. And lots of yummy food. (Yes, I got dessert--apple crisp--the best part!)
It was nice to have that extra hour of sleep, because Sunday was a busy day as well. Of course we went to church in the morning, and then after church we had a meeting of Women on Mission to pack boxes for Operation Christmas Child. Tabitha and Gracie stayed with me to help. We ate a delicious potluck lunch (hands-down best thing about potlucks: deviled eggs), then sorted toys and supplies and filled sixty boxes for boys and girls of all ages. This kind of project is one of my favorite things about the church--working together in fellowship to serve others.
We finished the boxes around 3, and we had our semimonthly evening service at 5, so the girls and I hung around until then. Finally after evening service, we went out for Chinese food and headed home.
I'm exhausted even as I think back on those two days! And this week hasn't been much calmer. But I'm thankful for all the friendships represented in the events of the weekend and the opportunities to fellowship and serve. Both are blessings of God's grace we have experienced over the ten months we've lived in this city. I can't complain.
Tonight I'm off to Chicago for a weekend with my girlfriends from college. Jenny and Sarah, here I come!
