The Apology
Do I really want to write a blog? I must have some doubts, because I’ve been considering blogging and toying with blog sites since we moved, but I’m just now--more than a month later--making it happen. Maybe a better question is why should I write a blog? I began thinking about it when a few people, upon hearing about our plans to move to Washington, DC, actually said to me, “You should write a blog about it!” or even something more vague, like, “I would love to hear about your experiences there!” So if I have at least a few friends who are interested in the activities and observations that fill up my days in this new city, this unique place, one unlike anywhere I’ve lived before, and if I like to write (and edit!), and if I’m writing in my personal journal about my experiences anyway, why not make my musings public--in a blog?
There are of course a few significant reasons. While I am guessing that with this move, I should have some good material for a blog, especially during these first few months, I worry that I won’t have enough to write about long term. There’s also the distinct possibility that, in spite of my friends’ kind enthusiasm, no one will really read what I write--I mean, I know that I always have good intentions to keep up with friends, but life is busy, and I don't always make it a priority. Another concern with a blog is that random crazy people will read it, or people will read it who think I’m self-absorbed, or worse, a bore, or disagree with my perspective and tell me about it. Unfortunately, I’m not one who can easily brush off criticism. So maybe writing a blog is not for me.
But I won’t know unless I try it. Being a mom of four, from Tulsa, with biological and adopted children of different races, living in Southeast DC, I might have a particular take on Washington life that hasn’t been written about before. If nothing else, I might learn and grow through it. And I can always give it up if I hate it, right? So here I go.
I will read! :o)
