The Valentines

It was a (mostly) beautiful Valentine's Day in DC! The kids came to the breakfast table to find Valentine's treats from their mom and dad and their Oma and Opa. (Their Gamie and Papa gave Valentine's gifts when they came here with us for the big move.)

Pretty Valentines
That was followed by a day of celebration--at school for the kids and at lunch for me. Harvey invited Judah and me on a Valentine's lunch date near his office. We took the bus, met up with him, and had a yummy Mexican meal at Tortilla Coast.

Then came the one dark spot in my lovely day. Harvey had taken the car to work, and I was planning to drive it back home so I could have it to pick up the kids from school later. As I left the parking garage at the Cannon House Office Building--the first time I've driven out of there on my own--I missed my turn and was stopped by a police officer for not driving appropriately in a roundabout. But apparently he was in the Valentine's spirit, because in spite of his sarcastic and intimidating mini-speech, in the end, he gave me direction and let me go without a ticket. And the day was so delightful that I somehow maintained my composure and made it home safely. (Prayer may have had something to do with it as well.) Thus continued my Valentine's Day bliss.

The kids were excited to get home from school and show off and dig through all their goodies.

We love Valentine's Day! We love candy!

Gracie had made Valentines for each of the rest of us in the family. I saw Tabitha's first, and I thought it was about the sweetest thing I'd ever seen:

Then I saw the one for Harvey and me:

Sweetest thing ever!

Harvey came home a little late, but I forgave him, because he walked in with these

for me and these

for the girls.

Harvey never wants me to buy him gifts. Sometimes people say not to buy them any gifts, but when Harvey says it, he means it. So I made him a batch of chocolate chip cookie dough last night. It's gone now.

As I listened to Mat Kearney on the way to pick up the kids from school, as I held my precious baby on the bus, as I drove away from the snarky cop safe and dry-eyed, and as I heard my kids laughing and playing upstairs after school, I thought about how happy and blessed I am to be here with my sweet family and husband. It really is the best Valentine's Day I can remember. And I think I will remember it for a long time.
